Assignment 4 1. Figure study using line (A1) - Seated model in an upright chair.  I was inspired to work in line for Assignment three, following research into the work of John Piper. His work really helped me navigate my way through the assignment and I really enjoyed his way of working with line and watercolour but but only that, my learning journey was enhanced by this study. It bought me a sense of confidence to follow and learn from an artist, almost acting like a mentor.   However, this assignment asks for an inventive approach. Working my way through part four there are artists that have inspired me through research that I hope will assist and guide me through this assignment.  Tracy Emin figure drawings:   Working with raw emotion, I have spoken of my admiration of this honesty on a sheet of paper. Every mark Emin makes on a page comes directly from her being. She is expressive and brave. I will take these attributes forward with me adopting an emot...

Project 6 Exercise 3 -  Portrait from memory or the imagination A girl I saw momentarily reading a book in the window or a coffee shop.  Chosen medium is pastel.  What is a portrait?  I think I have found this chapter from the course incredible difficult and frustrating, battling the lack of accuracy skills to produce a neat and accurate image against the desire to show a human spirit, energy and presence and so yes, I conclude that there is far more to a portrait than just the accurate depiction of a person. But how do you balance the two? I am so unsure of this and I hope that experimentation and failures will help guide me there.  How difficult is it to create a portrait of someone from a chance meeting or completely from the imagination?  Strangely, after the learning struggle so far in this chapter, I felt super relaxed about this drawing. I think this is because there was absolutely no pressure to get this right as the girl was no longer there, ...

Project 6 Exercise 2 - Your own head  I started this exercise with a number of quick sketches taken whilst looking at my head in the mirror. I used coloured pencil to sketch:  Feeling rather fearful and a little too refrained, I changed my medium to a black pen, this medium serves me well for a looser and more spontaneous line. Following examples by Tracy Emin, I chose to try a blind drawing, adding to this after I opened my eyes. Out of my initial sketches, this is the one that shows life and energy and is exciting to look at:  Head 1:  The fear continued so I opted for a photograph of my side profile to get me started.  I used a black brush pen and watercolour.  I looked at the basic shapes of the head and the angle of the profile and began to work the tones onto the paper with the watercolour:  Reflection of Head 1:  I can see shape and form in this drawing. It is not a disaster which comes as a relief. However:  There is not enough ...

Research Point - Artists Self Portraits  Tracy Emin - 'The last great adventure is you' Exhibit 2014 "The work is about rights of passage, of time and age, and the simple realisation we are always alone". - Emin.  'Good Red Love'  Gouache on canvas -2014 'You Never Said Goodbye' Embroidered Calico - 2014   'Strong Distance' Gouache  on canvas - 2013   Emin explores herself so deeply and expressively, seemingly without inhibition. Her lines are bold and confident and even though she draws the figure so confidently and without a face, I can feel her energy and presence.  Emin is known for her continuous exploration of herself, however these drawings alone show so much honesty and feeling. They are exciting drawings, they pull me in and offer so much of her as a person. Emin describes art as a cathartic act.  'The Memory of Tears' Acrylic on canvas - 2018   How do contemporary artists approach tone, medium, pose and story?   This...
